Huawei, a leader in providing next generation telecommunications network solutions for operators around the world, donated 10 tonnes of Maize Flour to the Kenya Red Cross Society to support urgent humanitarian relief efforts for victims of drought in Turkana District.
Speaking during the ceremony, Huawei’s Deputy CEO Mr. Jerry Xie said, “Huawei is fully committed to fulfilling its responsibility as a global corporate citizen with local presence, by enabling a higher standard of living for those in our society. This has put us in a good position to actively contribute towards the well being of the communities around us for the over 10 years we’ve been in Kenya”.
“We are grateful of Huawei’s contribution to hundreds of Kenyans who are in need support until they harvest their long term crops”. Said Mr. Abdishakur Othowai, Head of Disaster Management, Kenya Red Cross Society. “Since last year, we launched a drought appeal to reach 30 million Kenyans in over 29 districts, 10million of whom could not survive without external assistance”. The food donated by Huawei will support 740 families in Turkana for a month.
Other drought affected areas include North Eastern Kenya and Tana River Districts. The Kenya Red Cross is also currently involved in school feeding programmes in Lower Eastern Province in several primary schools.
Huawei endeavours in future to invest more in the Kenyan communities through education, technology transfer, environment conservation, and contributions towards disaster relief to enhance lives.
