Safaricom customers can now send text messages for less than KES1 for the next one month. This follows the launch of an SMS consumer campaign dubbed “Go SMS Crazy” by the listed telecoms company. The activation targets the firm’s over 15m pre-pay and post-pay customers and is an integral plank of Safaricom’s strategy of giving subscribers maximum value from using their lines, while diversifying from traditional voice usage into text and data, among others.
The one-month campaign which started yesterday, presents Safaricom customers with a superior value proposition which will see them pay between KES0.67 to KES1 per SMS on average under pre-set promotional bundles. The current SMS price is KES3.50 and the promotion represents up to 80% discount.
The “Go SMS Crazy” promotion is especially expected to excite the young and the young at heart, a segment for whom texting is a favored means of relaying messages. This has seen the development of a sub-culture complete with its own language, which has been aptly captured in the accompanying advertising campaign for the promotion. Coming in February, the “Month of Love”, the promotion is expected to further drive the traditionally high traffic during this season.
Speaking on the launch of the promotion, Safaricom Chief Executive Officer Michael Joseph said the move was aimed at rewarding the company’s customers for their loyalty which continues to anchor the firm’s record profitability. “We are happy to introduce this promotion which will be of great benefit to our customers. They can now communicate for KES1 or less during the one-month period. This is a way of than king our subscribers and incentivizing them to use text as opposed to other modes of communication,” he said.
